A coffee in New York with Grace Chandler Guttersen
Hi Chandler, welcome to the blog! We are so happy to have you here- could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Thrilled to be here and thank you for having me! I am the Founder and Curator of Vintage Grace. At VG, I source and curate designer vintage clothing, only selecting pieces I’d wear myself for a collection that’s as intentional as it is timeless. I live in New York City, but my friends would argue that statement as I tend to travel often. I love exploring new places and visiting family and friends around the world. I was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Colorado until I moved to Texas for high school and college. I always dreamt of city life and have lived here since 2016!
What does a normal working morning look like for you?
First thing’s first, matcha! I’ve really gotten into the art of making a matcha over the years and can’t start my morning without one. I do a quick morning journal entry and check socials and emails. I try to dedicate an hour or two to either walking the west side highway or pilates before tackling the daily tasks. Once I’m back, I get ready for client appointments and in between I’ll get emails written, source product, or product research (which takes up the most time!).
What inspired your journey into fashion, more so working with rare vintage pieces?
Growing up, I was always obsessed with getting dressed up. My family always emphasized the importance of looking nice, especially when going out in public or traveling. In addition to that, my mother and grandmother always made sure to teach me about brands and designers and I watched them invest in timeless pieces that they still have today (or have given to me). That led me to choose Fashion Merchandising as my college major and I followed a path into the corporate world working at Gucci and Bottega Veneta. In 2021, my mentor encouraged me to dive into the vintage world after honing in on my interest in fashion history. She connected me with some of the best vintage sellers in the industry and therefore Vintage Grace was born!
What is the most challenging part of sourcing specific items?
There are a couple components to this. First, it can be challenging to find pieces in amazing condition at reasonable prices that I can then feel comfortable selling to clients without making them inaccessible price wise. Second, oftentimes the items just don’t exist in the moment of desire and I really have to be patient waiting for it to come around. At the end of the day, that’s also the most fun because it’s like a treasure hunt and once I get the treasure, everyone is happy!
What inspired the name ‘Vintage Grace’?
My full name is Grace Chandler Guttersen, but I have gone by my middle name since birth. I was named after both of my great grandmothers who were also Grace. I’ve always loved the name and while I resonate with Chandler more, Grace is a part of me and I love to celebrate the strong women in my family whose name I carry.
How do you relax after a long day?
I love to wind down with a walk around the neighborhood, catching up with a friend over dinner and finally a hot bath before getting into bed. I don’t watch much TV (lame I know) so I’ll spend time reading news or shopping (love TRR and Vestiaire for new arrivals). If I need a break from my phone, I’ll read a bit from my current book.
What is your favorite item you've sourced?
They are all special to me in their own way, but if I had to choose I’d say the collection of Spring 1996 Alaïa knitted and beaded pieces are my absolute favorite and think it would be extremely hard to part with them.
How do you plan on stirring things up in the future?
I’m dedicated to expanding a truly unique archive with a focus on highly collectible runway pieces. Vintage Grace will continue to evolve—not just as a premier destination for vintage clothing but also as a source of inspiration for vintage lovers, sustainable shopping advocates, and those who celebrate individual style.
